Drivers across Raleigh woke up to a wall of white early Sunday, May 24, 2026, as dense fog and patchy mist settled into low-lying neighborhoods and slowed the morning commute. Temperatures started out in the low 60s, and the muggy feel is expected to hang around through the day. The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for the Triangle this morning, with conditions expected to improve by mid to late morning as the fog gradually lifts.
Fog And The Morning Commute
At 4:50 a.m. EDT, forecasters warned that visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less in many Triangle counties and said they were monitoring trends for a possible Dense Fog Advisory, according to NWS Raleigh. Drivers are urged to slow down, stick with low-beam headlights, and leave extra room between vehicles while the fog hangs around. If you hit a pocket of near-zero visibility, pull off the road to a safe spot, switch on your hazard lights, and wait it out until you can see again.
Afternoon Storms And Memorial Day Outlook
The murky start will not last. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon, with the first round most likely between about 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and storm chances increasing from late afternoon into the evening. Highs should top out near 80°F Sunday, and Memorial Day Monday, May 25, looks unsettled, with numerous showers and thunderstorms likely and highs around 81°F, according to the NWS Raleigh. Rainfall totals are expected to be a few tenths of an inch for most spots, with localized pockets up to about a half inch under heavier downpours.
Plan Ahead
Give yourself some extra time for morning drives and expect slower bus and taxi service while the fog lingers. For afternoon and evening plans, keep the rain gear handy and be ready for outdoor events to be delayed or interrupted. If you are headed to parades or cookouts, keep an eye on local forecasts and event updates. Updates will be shared if a Dense Fog Advisory or any weather watches are issued later today.
