A late-night shift at a Tomball Planet Fitness turned violent when a woman working at the front desk was thrown to the floor and punched over and over, an April 21 attack now at the center of a sheriff’s investigation. Nearly three weeks later, her family says she is still in serious pain and that the suspected attacker has yet to be arrested.
Surveillance video of the assault, recorded on a coworker’s phone and shared with ABC13, shows the employee being grabbed, slammed down, and repeatedly hit inside the Tomball gym. The victim’s family told the station they first filed a report with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office, and were later told the case had been turned over to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
According to the family, they felt the case was sitting in limbo until media inquiries began. After questions from ABC13, they said they were informed that a detective is now assigned to the case and that deputies believe surveillance has helped identify a person of interest.
Victim's account
The woman, who asked not to be named out of fear for her safety, told ABC13, "It's definitely scary, I've never really been in a situation like this." She said she does not know the attacker and that the sudden, brutal nature of the assault has left her shaken.
She now struggles to walk and describes shooting pain running up her leg. On top of the physical injuries, she said she is anxious about going out alone and worries the suspect could be watching or following her.
Legal implications
While the family says investigators have a person of interest, officials have not announced any charges. Under Texas law, an assault that causes serious bodily injury can be treated as aggravated assault, a more serious felony offense. The key elements are laid out in Texas Penal Code Chapter 22.
Whether prosecutors ultimately pursue aggravated assault charges will depend on what the investigation uncovers, including medical documentation of the victim’s injuries and other evidence gathered by detectives.
Similar incidents at other clubs
The Tomball attack is not an isolated incident for the gym chain. In early April a Planet Fitness worker in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, was stabbed multiple times, according to 6abc. In South Florida, CBS Miami released video of a separate attack on a Planet Fitness employee in Little Havana, highlighting a troubling pattern of violence targeting workers at some locations.
How to help
The Tomball victim’s family says investigators already have surveillance that they believe identifies a suspect and that law enforcement is continuing to work the case. Anyone who might have seen something or who has additional video from the gym or nearby area is urged to reach out.
