A family argument over how done a burger should be ended in gunfire on a southeast Oklahoma City street, leaving one man dead and two of his relatives facing first degree murder complaints, according to police. The victim, 50 year old Erick Deshawan Edwards Sr., was found with multiple gunshot wounds near Southeast 15th Street and South High Avenue and rushed to a hospital, where he died. Investigators say the confrontation started inside a nearby home, then spilled outside, where neighbors heard shots and called 911. Detectives spent weeks reviewing video and witness statements before making arrests.
According to News 9, investigators arrested Kapri Khristian Lewis, identified in court paperwork as Edwards’ stepson, along with Elijah Wallace Karrim Mitchell. Both were booked on complaints of first degree murder. An affidavit filed in the case lays out the sequence of events, which detectives say ties both men to the scene that night.
Officers were first called out on April 13 to the southeast Oklahoma City neighborhood near Southeast 15th Street and South High Avenue after multiple reports of gunfire. The Oklahoma City Police Department later identified the victim as Erick D. Edwards Sr., 50, and said he had been shot in the face and body before being transported to a local hospital, where he died, as reported by KOCO.
Police: Argument Over Undercooked Burger Turned Violent
Court documents reviewed by News 9 state that the trouble started when Lewis and Edwards began arguing over a burger that one of them believed was not fully cooked. The disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical fight. Investigators say Edwards then walked out to his car, apparently to leave, while Lewis and Mitchell followed him outside.
Witnesses told detectives they heard several gunshots and later saw two men running from the scene and getting into the same vehicle they had arrived in, according to the affidavit. Surveillance video cited in the filing reportedly shows that vehicle arriving and then leaving the area at a high rate of speed shortly after the shooting.
Police Seek Tips As Investigation Continues
The case remains active, and detectives are still working to piece together every step of what happened that night. Investigators are asking anyone with video or information to contact the Oklahoma City Police Department homicide tip line at (405) 297 1200, according to Oklahoma City Free Press. Officials say additional charges could be considered once prosecutors review all of the evidence, and neighbors with security cameras are being urged to share any relevant footage.
Legal process
Lewis and Mitchell have been arrested on complaints of first degree murder, which are formal allegations that must be proven in court. An arrest is not a conviction, and both men are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty in a court of law.
The killing has rattled a usually quiet block and stands as a stark example of how a domestic dispute that starts inside a home can turn deadly in a matter of moments. Anyone who might have seen or recorded anything connected to the shooting is urged to contact OKCPD’s tip line so detectives can fully reconstruct what unfolded that night.
