A budget-friendly dresser that has become a staple in bedrooms and dorm rooms across the country is now on the federal recall list. On May 28, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of about 165,000 Mainstays 9-drawer fabric dressers sold at Walmart nationwide after determining the units can tip over and entrap users, posing a risk of serious injury or death.
The collapsible fabric-drawer chests have been a popular low-cost alternative for tight spaces, especially bedrooms and dorm rooms where they are often used without wall anchors. Walmart is offering refunds and is urging customers to keep the dressers away from children until they are returned, anchored, or otherwise remedied.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled product is a Mainstays-branded 9-drawer fabric dresser with a black metal frame and nine black or brown fabric drawers with handles. Each dresser measures about 40 inches long, 13.75 inches wide, 45 inches tall and weighs about 32 pounds.
The agency’s recall notice (recall number 26-522) says the dressers were manufactured from September 2023 through December 2025 by Hop Thang Interior Wood Co. Ltd. in Vietnam and sold at Walmart stores and on Walmart.com from September 2023 through March 2026 for about $80. The notice instructs consumers to stop using the dressers unless they are anchored to the wall, place affected units where children cannot access them, and contact Walmart for a full refund. Customers will be asked to return the fabric drawers to a store and dispose of the metal frame according to local regulations.
Walmart says it will provide refunds and guidance for returning the product. Customers can call 800-925-6278 or visit Walmart for more information. Stores are expected to accept the drawers and the company recommends disposing of the metal frame in line with local rules. Until the unit is returned or securely anchored, families are urged to move the dresser out of reach of children and avoid opening multiple drawers at once, which can increase the risk of tipping.
How To Check Whether Your Dresser Is Affected
As reported by Boston 25 News, owners should look under the dresser’s top panel for a label that lists a tracking or lot number and a production date in MM/YYYY format. The recall images show examples such as "Tracking/Lot #: HCV202601" and "Production Date: 01/2026." The product name "Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dresser" should also appear on receipts and packaging if you need to confirm a purchase.
What Regulators Say And Why It Matters
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the dressers "violate the mandatory safety standard as required by the STURDY Act," a federal measure intended to reduce tip-over deaths and serious injuries from clothing storage units. The commission also notes that federal law prohibits selling products that are subject to a recall, and the agency has recently stepped up enforcement around low-cost fabric furniture that may not meet structural requirements.
If you own one of these dressers, you can contact Walmart at 800-925-6278 or visit Walmart to request a refund and get return instructions. Consumers with safety concerns or who want to report incidents can call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772 or file a report at SaferProducts.gov.
