Downtown Walnut Creek is down a slice. Pizza My Heart’s neighborhood outpost has quietly closed after nearly a decade of feeding local diners, wrapping up its final day of service last Saturday. The spot, tucked near the corner of Botelho Drive and South California Boulevard since 2017, left a printed note on the door thanking the community and hinting that the story might not be over.
As reported by KRON4, the message did not mince words: “Sadly, this location has closed.” The station also reports that most Walnut Creek staffers have been shifted to the Pleasant Hill store and that the company stopped short of ruling out a return to downtown Walnut Creek somewhere down the line.
Where the Shop Was and Where Staff Moved
The Walnut Creek restaurant operated at 1590 Botelho Drive in the Plaza Escuela complex, according to the chain’s location listing on Pizza My Heart. Historical notes trace the brand’s roots back to Capitola in the early 1980s, per Wikipedia, long before the Walnut Creek shop joined the lineup.
Downtown Turnover Is Ongoing
For downtown regulars, the closure feels like another sign of the constant churn in Walnut Creek’s dining scene, as new concepts and national chains continue to reshuffle the retail deck. Earlier this year, documented another long-running downtown loss when Genova Delicatessen served its final sandwich, highlighting the pressure on legacy operators trying to hang on.
For now, Walnut Creek fans hunting for a familiar slice will need to head to nearby stores. KRON4 notes that many of the Walnut Creek employees have landed at the Pleasant Hill location at 2380 Monument Boulevard in the Crossroads Shopping Center. The sign on the shuttered storefront also asked patrons to “be on the lookout” for a possible return, leaving just enough hope that Pizza My Heart might someday get a sequel in downtown Walnut Creek.
