Atlanta police say they now have arrest warrants for Dontavious Jamaine Banks Jr., accusing him of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm in connection with an April 11 shooting that left Antonio James Brown dead. The gunfire erupted in the 1400 block of DeSoto Avenue SW, just off Perkerson Park, where investigators say Brown was discovered with a gunshot wound while sitting in a vehicle. Detectives say a mix of surveillance footage, witness accounts and community tips pointed to Banks, and the homicide case remains active. Authorities announced the warrants on May 22, 2026, as they continue to track down fresh leads.
According to 11Alive, arrest documents say surveillance video showed Brown arriving at a specific address, then later walking with a man investigators identified as Banks shortly before shots were fired. The warrants state that officers recovered a live 9mm round and a spent shell casing at the scene, and later located Brown inside a gray 2010 Honda Accord with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. The filings also quote the alleged shooter as saying "watch this" before the gunfire, and note that family members and social media activity helped police link the suspect to the case.
Investigators Trace Suspect’s Movements Near Perkerson Park
Police told reporters that witnesses heard two gunshots around 8:25 p.m. and saw a person of interest peeling off a black long-sleeved shirt while leaving the area, according to Atlanta News First. Authorities say that same person later came back to Perkerson Park carrying a backpack and described him as a slim male, roughly 5-foot-9 to 6-foot tall. Investigators are urging anyone who was in or around the park with cellphone video or photos from that night to contact police as they work to strengthen the case file.
Family And Community Respond
In the days after the shooting, Brown’s relatives held a vigil and spoke to WSB-TV, saying he was an aspiring singer who sold homemade shirts to get by and that they were determined to see justice, as reported by WSB-TV. The station reported that family and supporters circulated flyers and that a $5,000 reward was being offered for information leading to an arrest. Community members joined detectives in calling for anyone with knowledge, video or other details to come forward.
Charges And What Comes Next
Warrants formally charge Banks with murder, aggravated assault and a firearms offense while committing a felony, according to documents obtained by 11Alive. If he is taken into custody, the case would move through Atlanta Police booking procedures before landing on the desks of prosecutors in Fulton County. Investigators emphasize that the probe is still active and that additional charges could be added if new evidence surfaces.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-TIPS or contact the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit, according to Atlanta News First. Police say tips and video already helped them follow social media and family leads in this case, and that those community clues remain crucial. Authorities say they plan to release updates if there is an arrest or new court filings in Brown’s killing.
