A child was killed Wednesday after being struck by a car on McCrory Lane in west Nashville, according to local authorities and media reports. Emergency crews pronounced the child dead at the scene, and police have opened an investigation into the crash.
Metro Nashville police and Nashville Fire Department units responded to the roadway and remained on scene for hours as investigators worked the case, WZTV (FOX17) reported. As of the station's latest update, officials had not released the child's age or any identifying information.
Where It Happened
The collision occurred along McCrory Lane near Highway 70, a stretch of west Nashville that has already been on safety watchers' radar. Earlier this month, a pedestrian was killed on a railroad bridge near McCrory Lane, underscoring ongoing concerns about the corridor, according to WSMV.
Traffic Safety And Child Deaths
Unintentional injuries remain a leading cause of death for children in Nashville, and Metro's child death review team has repeatedly flagged traffic incidents as a persistent problem. Speeding, impaired driving and lack of experience surface again and again in fatal crash reviews, according to the Metro Nashville Child Death Review, which also calls for closer scrutiny of roadway design and stronger enforcement as part of prevention efforts.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have video or information about Wednesday's crash to contact Metro Nashville police, WZTV (FOX17) reported. As of that report, officials had not released information on possible charges or the status of the driver involved.
