A quiet Sunday on the Westside turned chaotic when a motorcyclist waiting at a red light near Sepulveda Boulevard and Slauson Avenue was stabbed in what police are calling an apparently unprovoked attack, according to Culver City officers.
Authorities say the rider was stopped at the intersection when a man allegedly walked up to him, stabbed him, then took off on foot. The victim was rushed to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, and police say no motive has been made public.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the attack happened at about 5 p.m. Officers later found 45-year-old Maurice Williams nearby on Jefferson Boulevard, where they arrested him. Williams was booked into Culver City jail on an attempted murder charge.
Police say they are still working to piece together what led up to the roadside confrontation at the busy intersection, which sits at the border of Culver City and the surrounding Westside neighborhoods.
Police Call The Attack Unprovoked
Investigators say the suspect approached the motorcyclist as he waited for the light to change, then fled on foot after the stabbing, NBC Los Angeles reports. Officers later tracked him down and made the arrest a short distance away.
The victim’s name has not been released, and authorities have not announced any connection between the rider and the suspect, underscoring their description of the incident as unprovoked.
Per the Culver City Police Department, anyone with information about the stabbing is urged to call the on-duty watch commander at (310) 253-6202. The department’s patrol contacts page lists that number for tips and notes that investigators are following up on witness statements.
Police are also asking for any video of the incident, including dashcam or cellphone footage, to help them firm up the timeline and circumstances of the attack.
Officials emphasized that a booking is an early step in the criminal process and does not establish guilt. The case will move through the courts as investigators continue to sort through what happened at that red light.
