Winthrop University is setting up a satellite campus in the heart of downtown Fort Mill, after the town and the university inked a deal to bring classes and programs into an existing building on North White Street across from Town Hall. The compact site is planned as a three-part operation: an early-childhood lab school, direct dual-enrollment options for Fort Mill high-school students, and graduate and continuing-education offerings for adults and local employers. Town leaders are pitching the move as a way to expand access to higher education without the regular trek to Rock Hill or Charlotte.

What the Fort Mill campus will include

According to Queen City News, the Fort Mill site will run three programs branded Launchpad, Ascend and Altitude. Launchpad will function as an early-childhood laboratory school modeled on Winthrop’s Macfeat lab school. Ascend will extend Winthrop’s dual-enrollment offerings to Fort Mill High School students. Altitude will focus on graduate and continuing-education programs geared toward adult learners and regional employers. Together, the three-pronged setup is intended to knit early-childhood, K-12 and higher-education pathways into one pipeline centered in downtown Fort Mill.

Officials say it will boost local opportunity

In a statement to Queen City News, Mayor Guynn Savage said, “The Town of Fort Mill has long been committed to building a community where our residents can thrive at every stage of life.” Fort Mill School District Superintendent Grey Young told the outlet that preparing students for whatever comes after graduation is a district priority and called the new campus “an amazing opportunity” for both students and staff.

Economic and educational ripples

Winthrop already plays a sizable role in the regional economy. An impact study from the university found it generated more than $200 million in regional activity in 2023 and supported roughly 2,500 jobs, per Winthrop University. Bringing programs and students into Fort Mill could extend that reach, feeding local retail, housing and workforce pipelines while giving employers tailored upskilling options through the Altitude offerings. University and town leaders describe the campus as part of a broader push to tighten the connection between higher education and area employers.

Where the campus might sit

The agreement calls for the campus to move into an existing building on North White Street across from Town Hall, though officials have not publicly mapped out every detail. The Town of Fort Mill previously finalized purchases of downtown properties along North White Street and has been renovating several buildings for municipal use, according to a town press release. How much additional renovation or shared use will be needed to house Winthrop’s programs has not yet been spelled out.

No firm opening date is on the books. Town and university spokespeople say the timeline will depend on planning, leasing and program logistics. For now, Fort Mill residents can expect new educational options to land downtown in a move local leaders hope will let more students and workers stay closer to home while leveling up their education.
