A late-night encounter on a quiet stretch of northwest Austin ended in a barrage of gunfire, and now a newly unsealed affidavit is filling in the brutal details.
Investigators say a Travis County man and at least one other shooter opened fire on 35-year-old Joshua Williams in early April, hitting him more than 40 times. Officers found Williams with multiple gunshot wounds in the 10900 block of Brazoria Lane and pronounced him dead at 1:09 a.m. Court records unsealed Friday lay out how detectives say they pieced the case together.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers were dispatched just after 12:40 a.m. on April 3 for reports of shots fired. Homicide detectives and crime-scene specialists processed the area and immediately asked neighbors to share any footage recorded between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. to help track whoever was behind the gunfire.
Travis County court documents allege that two shooters each fired more than 20 rounds at Williams and that he was struck more than 40 times, according to the Austin American-Statesman. The affidavit says investigators focused on a white Nissan Sentra seen in the area and were able to pull a license plate number from surveillance video.
How Investigators Tied A Car To The Scene
Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for home-security and dash-cam footage and followed up on anonymous tips that included information not released to the public, according to local reporting. FOX 7 Austin reported that gate‑entrance and store surveillance captured a white Sentra and a man in a white T‑shirt with green lettering in the hours before the shooting.
Charges And Next Steps
Authorities have charged 28‑year‑old Cyron Lee Carter with killing Williams and say Carter had his cellphone turned off during the time of the shooting, the Austin American-Statesman reports. Carter is being held at the Travis County Jail on $400,000 bail, and police say additional charges are likely as the investigation moves forward.
Detectives are still asking for help. Anyone with photos, video, or other information is urged to contact the Austin Police Department at 512‑974‑TIPS or submit tips anonymously through Capital Area Crime Stoppers. The killing is being investigated as Austin's 18th homicide of 2026, and the case remains open as authorities work to determine whether more suspects will be charged.
