Downtown Aurora is getting ready to trade quiet river views for crackling skies on July 3, as the city rolls out its annual Independence Day fireworks show along the Fox River. Concerts and DJs will set the vibe in the early evening, food vendors will keep things festive, and once night settles in, all eyes will turn upward for the main event. City officials are strongly urging people to lean on shuttle service and designated parking instead of trying to jockey for curbside spots near the riverwalk.

Where to Watch and Who's Playing

If you are looking for prime viewing, the sweet spots are RiverEdge Park and McCullough Park, where the city is promising family-friendly music and concessions at both locations, according to the City of Aurora. At RiverEdge (360 N Broadway Ave), DJ Suave Smooth takes over at 6 p.m., followed by The 6050s on stage from 7 to 9 p.m. Over at McCullough Park (150 W Illinois Ave), DJ Peña will be spinning from 6 to 9:45 p.m. The city also notes that food trucks will be lined up on the Wilder Park promenade and in the Prisco Center lot, so no one has to watch fireworks on an empty stomach.

Shuttles, Parking and Accessibility

A City of Aurora Facebook post lays out free park-and-ride shuttles to both RiverEdge Park and McCullough Park starting at 6 p.m. Shuttle service to the parks will run through 9 p.m., with return trips kicking back in after the fireworks and continuing until the final departure at 11 p.m. The routes are color coded red, green, blue, gold and orange, and the post notes designated handicap parking at the north end of the Aurora Transportation Center lot as well as in the Prisco Center parking lot.

Plan Ahead

Crowds are expected and curbside parking downtown will be tight; showing up early, taking the shuttle or walking in from nearby lots will save some frustration, CBS Chicago notes in its regional roundup. For last-minute changes or questions, residents can call the Community Events Division at (630) 256-3370 or email [email protected], the City of Aurora says.
