Eleven-year-old Jakya Dawkins is recovering in a Jacksonville hospital after her family says she was mauled by a pit bull while she was playing at a friend's house. Relatives say surveillance cameras recorded the attack along with the child's terrified screams as neighbors rushed into the yard and fought to pull the dog off her. Family members described deep wounds to her wrist, close to an artery, as well as multiple injuries to her chest and back, and say they are now focused on both her physical healing and emotional recovery. According to relatives, Dawkins has said she will not go back outside until the dog is removed.

The surveillance footage shows the dog, which the family identified as Lucky, grabbing Dawkins by the back of her pants and dragging her across the yard, as reported by News4JAX. In the video, the girl can be heard pleading, "I don't want to die." Her stepfather told the station he jumped the fence and swung at the dog to distract it long enough for relatives to pull her away. The family said Dawkins was taken to a hospital and that she is now recovering.

Animal Care & Protective Services responded, and ACPS Division Chief Michael Bricker told News4JAX that the dog "has been contained" and will be held for the required quarantine period. According to the station, officers did not remove the dog from the property when they first arrived because the owners said it was secured. The dog's owner, Chelsea Rodriguez, told reporters she was apologetic and said the animal was only protecting his home.

Why bites can be severe for children

Researchers say pediatric dog-bite cases make up a disproportionate share of the most serious wounds and often end in hospital stays or surgery. A 2020 review in Injury Epidemiology found that children who arrive at hospitals with dog-bite injuries frequently require operative care, and CDC data show that nonfatal dog bites send thousands of people to emergency rooms every year. Public health experts point to close supervision, secure fencing and careful introductions between kids and unfamiliar dogs as key ways to reduce the risk.

What's next for the family and the animal

The family says their attention is on Jakya's recovery while Animal Care & Protective Services completes its follow-up and the dog finishes its quarantine period, according to Animal Care & Protective Services. Officials are urging anyone who has video or additional information about the incident to share it with investigators. Neighbors say the footage has left people rattled and serves as a stark reminder to watch children closely around other people's pets.
