Friday afternoon turned tense along the 800 block of Northwest 10th Terrace in Fort Lauderdale, where a man barricaded himself inside a business and drew a multi-agency SWAT response along with a temporary street closure. Officers and specialized units stayed on scene for hours as they worked to reach the man, and the standoff finally ended when he surrendered and was taken into custody, police said.
Fort Lauderdale police were called at about 2:42 p.m. after a report that an unknown man had entered a restricted area inside the business and was “acting erratically,” according to Local 10. Patrol officers, a K-9 unit and members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office aviation unit searched the surrounding neighborhood but initially could not find him. Investigators later determined he was actually still inside the building and alone.
How The Standoff Ended
With the area secured, police, SWAT officers and crisis negotiators tried to communicate with the man as the hours ticked by. The department later said the suspect “surrendered peacefully” and was taken into custody, per Local 10.
Charges And Motive Still Unclear
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has not released the man’s name, explained why he barricaded himself, or announced any charges. Investigators are still working the case and have not indicated that anyone else was inside the business during the incident.
Neighborhood Context
The Northwest 10th Terrace corridor has seen serious violence in recent years, including a July 2024 drive-by shooting that left two people dead, as reported by the Miami Herald. This latest standoff is likely to renew questions from nearby business owners and residents about safety and police response in the area.
Fort Lauderdale police did not immediately release additional details, and detectives said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
