Belmont just scored a new neighborhood living room. 77 & Belle, a Black-owned cafe named for owner Diamond Alexander's grandmother Hattie Bell, quietly opened last week at 1720 Pegram Street in Charlotte's Belmont neighborhood. The airy, 1,755-square-foot shop seats roughly 56 people and includes a private back room that Alexander envisions as a spot for meetings and small gatherings. The menu centers on coffee, matcha lattes, teas, smoothies, fresh-pressed juices and a rotating cast of pastries.
Alexander said the project is rooted in family ritual, right down to the name. She told reporters she named the cafe for her grandmother and grew up watching her lean hard into her caffeine fix. "My Nana loves coffee. We would go out to lunch and she would order like, six cups coffee," Alexander said. She also hopes the cafe will settle in as a go-to base for remote workers, according to Axios Charlotte.
