South Lyon's Cattails Golf Club is about to play through its final hole. The public, 18-hole course on West 9 Mile Road, a local fixture for roughly 35 years, is expected to shut its gates for good as soon as next Monday, and the owner is practically begging golfers to squeeze in one last round.
As reported by the Detroit Free Press, owner Tony Moscone said the course is being kept open "week to week" and urged players to "get in for a round by Sunday, because if you wait til Monday, it might be too late." Staff is already preparing to wind down operations as the property shifts toward redevelopment.
Planned Subdivision Wins Preliminary Approval
Lyon Township records show the land that holds Cattails has a preliminary planned-development review on file for a project called Cattails Cove, which sketches out roughly 127 homes on about 160 acres. The township's meeting synopsis notes that the board approved that preliminary review, and coverage at Hometownlife details the developer and earlier sewer-assessment discussions tied to the site.
Course History And Local Role
According to the club's website, the 18-hole layout opened in 1991 and has since hosted regional amateur events and public tournaments. For many golfers in western Oakland County, Cattails has long been the affordable, walk-up alternative to private clubs, the kind of place you could decide to play on a Saturday morning and actually get out.
Development Already Creeping In
New-home listings along 9 Mile Road are already advertising lots "next to Cattails Golf Course," a clear signal that the corridor is shifting toward housing. Local listings on Realtor and Redfin show new communities and spec homes pressed right up against the fairways.
What Happens After The Last Putt
A preliminary planned-development approval does not mean the bulldozers roll in tomorrow. Developers still need final site-plan sign-offs, county reviews, and building permits before construction can start, according to the township synopsis. Until those steps are complete, Moscone told the Detroit Free Press, the course will stay on that week-to-week schedule.
For anyone hoping to log a final round and say goodbye, the club's website still lists tee-time information and contact details. Cattails gives its address as 57737 West 9 Mile Road and offers online booking at Cattails Golf Club.
