Chicago's lakefront skies will be missing their trademark blue-and-gold streaks in 2026. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will not perform at the Chicago Air and Water Show on Aug. 15–16, 2026, leaving a prime headliner slot open over North Avenue Beach. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are already listed for those dates on military schedules and are expected to step into the top-billing role, with city organizers saying the full performer lineup will drop in mid-July as planning continues.
That development was first reported by NBC Chicago, which spoke with Blue Angels leadership about the scheduling clash. Captain Danielle Cribb told the outlet that "our annual schedule is developed through a variety of operational and logistical considerations, and unfortunately we are unable to support every request each year." The report also noted that the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has not yet posted the official 2026 roster.
The team's own 2026 calendar backs that up. The Blue Angels are committed to the Oregon International Air Show in McMinnville on Aug. 15–16 instead of Chicago, according to the published schedule from the Blue Angels. Those dates line up exactly with the Chicago Air and Water Show weekend, effectively taking the Navy squad out of the running this year.
Thunderbirds Listed For Chicago Dates
With the Blue Angels out, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are positioned to headline the show. Chicago appears on their 2026 itinerary for Aug. 15–16, according to the official schedule from the Thunderbirds. When the Air Force team is on the bill, it typically delivers the high-energy closing demonstration that packs the lakefront.
Dates, Rehearsals And What To Expect
The city's tourism guide lists the Chicago Air and Water Show for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15–16, with a rehearsal scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14, and show hours from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, according to Choose Chicago. The guide also notes the event is free and viewable along the lakefront from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street, which usually means packed beaches and plenty of tweaks to transit service during the weekend.
What Fans Should Watch For
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has indicated the full performer lineup will be released in mid-July, per reporting by NBC Chicago, so fans will want to keep an eye on official city pages for the final roster. The teams themselves publish detailed calendars too. The 2026 show list from the Blue Angels and the itinerary from the Thunderbirds remain the quickest ways to double-check who is slated to roar over the lakefront.
