What started as a routine Sunday evening drive east of Broken Bow turned deadly when a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 70 at Canoe Road in McCurtain County claimed the life of a local man. Emergency crews were called out around 6:30 p.m. after reports of a collision, and investigators say the lead vehicle had slowed to make a turn before being hit from behind. The driver of that first car later died from his injuries, while the people in the second vehicle were reported uninjured.
What officials say
According to KOKH/OKC Fox, troopers identified the victim as 43-year-old Mark Baker of Broken Bow. Investigators said both vehicles were traveling eastbound when the first vehicle began to slow to turn, and the second vehicle then struck the slowing car in a rear-end crash near the turn onto Canoe Road. Officials say the investigation is still underway as they gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Dangerous stretch: why U.S. 70 matters
The stretch of U.S. 70 east of Broken Bow has already been on the radar of state planners. The corridor has been studied for safety improvements by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, which has looked at needs along the route and potential upgrades. Nationally, the Federal Highway Administration notes that rural, two-lane undivided roads account for a disproportionate share of fatal and serious-injury crashes and recommends countermeasures such as centerline rumble strips and wider shoulders. Those kinds of projects are often cited by planners and safety advocates when they argue for targeted investments along high-speed state highways that serve small towns like Broken Bow.
Investigation and what to expect
State troopers are continuing their probe and have not released additional details about possible contributing factors or any citations connected to the crash. Collision reports in Oklahoma are typically filed with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and may be processed through the state's OCERS portal for public access. This death is the latest deadly highway incident in the area; a May head-on crash on a different route that killed a Broken Bow woman received local attention as well. May head-on crash.
