Midday gunfire turned a University Heights intersection into a crime scene Wednesday when a 79-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were shot in the legs, police said. The shooting was reported around 1:23 p.m. at West 183rd Street and Andrews Avenue North. Both victims were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital and are expected to survive.
What police say
According to the New York Daily News, responding officers found the two victims with leg wounds and quickly sealed off the corner. Police are looking for two men who took off running south on Andrews Avenue North after the shots were fired. No arrests had been announced, and detectives were canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance video.
Where this happened
The shooting adds to a string of recent gun violence in University Heights. Earlier this month, a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot near a neighborhood playground. Neighbors told local outlets they are increasingly worried about gunfire in public spaces and are calling for more police patrols.
Investigation details
Investigators told the New York Daily News they believe the 26-year-old man may have been the intended target and that he has prior arrests, though police have not released his name. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact detectives. The investigation is ongoing, and there were no arrests as of Wednesday evening.
