What started as an argument over damage to a car ended with a Bronx rideshare driver running for safety in broad daylight. Surveillance video shows two men chasing Victor Hernandez and one catching up to punch him near the entrance of a neighborhood bodega. Hernandez slipped inside the store, where the owner stepped in and helped stop the attack.
Video and witness account
Surveillance footage reviewed by News 12 Bronx appears to show one suspect closing the distance on Hernandez and striking him near the bodega doorway while another man follows close behind. Hernandez told reporters he managed to get inside the store and that the owner intervened to break up the assault.
Not an isolated incident
The attack adds to a string of violent confrontations involving drivers in the borough this year. On Jan. 1, ABC7 New York reported that a Bronx rideshare driver was found shot to death inside his car in what the station called New York City's first homicide of 2026. Investigators said that killing may have followed a minor fender-bender. That earlier case underscored safety concerns for drivers who can become targets after disputes or roadside conflicts.
Police investigation
Police say the incident involving Hernandez stemmed from a dispute over a car and that the investigation remains ongoing, according to News 12 Bronx. Authorities have not yet released detailed suspect descriptions while detectives review the video and pursue leads.
