A 63-year-old woman was shot in the leg Saturday after she stepped outside to take out the trash from her Bedford Park apartment, police said. The shooting unfolded near East 197th Street and Briggs Avenue. EMS transported her to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
According to the New York Daily News, officers said a gunman opened fire on the woman, then bolted from the scene. Detectives began canvassing the block and pulling nearby surveillance footage as they opened an investigation into the shooting.
Another Violent Night in Bedford Park
The incident follows a string of recent shootings in the Bedford Park area, including a mid-May attack on East 198th Street that sent a man to St. Barnabas Hospital and led to an arrest, according to local coverage. Norwood News reported that police shut down several blocks around Bainbridge and Briggs avenues after that May shooting and later took a suspect into custody.
Police Say Retaliation Suspected
Detectives told the New York Daily News they believe Saturday's shooting may have been retaliation connected to the woman’s son. Police said the son was not home at the time. Authorities did not immediately say whether they had identified a suspect or made any arrests.
