Bryn Mawr is about to smell a whole lot more like butter.
The Buttery, the Main Line bakery and café known for its tangy sourdough loaves and glossy, overachieving pastries, is opening its third shop this weekend at 836 W. Lancaster Ave. The new 82-seat café will run a full breakfast and lunch operation daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the kitchen serving food through 3 p.m. A Bryn Mawr-only lemon poppy kouign amann will make its debut at the grand opening, and it will be available only while supplies last.
As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, the café is run by husband-and-wife team John and Silenia Rhoads. They launched the first Buttery in Malvern in 2015, then added an Ardmore outpost before setting their sights on Bryn Mawr. "We're so excited to be in this town," Silenia Rhoads told the paper, calling Bryn Mawr "a good center point on the Main Line."
The Bryn Mawr opening comes with some swag-laced incentives. The first 50 customers each day of opening weekend will walk out with a branded tote, and the first 100 will score a sablé cookie. The exclusive lemon poppy kouign amann will be up for grabs for as long as trays last. Details on the seating layout, operating hours and that opening-weekend pastry were also reported by MyChesCo, which notes that the Bryn Mawr shop sticks with The Buttery’s all-day counter-to-table service model.
Behind The Expansion
The Bryn Mawr café is not a one-off. The Buttery has been quietly gearing up for a larger footprint. A centralized bakehouse in Norristown opened last year to boost production capacity, and the owners say that move has opened the door to more growth.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, a Northern Liberties location is planned for later in 2026. The company also expects additional expansion in 2027. For Bryn Mawr specifically, dinner service and a liquor license are on the horizon as the next big steps.
Locals should expect a steady line during opening weekend. The Buttery is posting menus, hours and ongoing updates on its website, and the team is nudging followers to keep an eye out for daily pastry drops and seasonal specials.
