A Florida truck driver ended a white-knuckle descent on Cabbage Hill by steering his semitrailer into a rock wall Sunday, bringing the rig to rest along westbound Interstate 84 near Pendleton. Oregon State Police troopers responded near milepost 220 and found the trailer lodged roughly 40 feet off the right shoulder. Authorities say neither the driver nor a passenger suffered serious injuries, and the highway was not blocked for an extended period.
According to East Oregonian, Oregon State Police said the semitrailer stopped against the rock face and that troopers issued a warning for failing to drive within the lane. The paper reports that crews worked to remove the rig and reopen traffic after the scene was secured.
Why Cabbage Hill Keeps Truckers On Their Toes
Cabbage Hill, also called Emigrant Hill, is a seven-mile downgrade with sustained 6 percent grades and tight curves that routinely test truck braking systems, according to ODOT. The manual notes escape ramps at mileposts 221 and 220 and warns that a large share of crashes on the hill involve out-of-state carriers.
Troopers Cite Hot Brakes And A Missed Runaway Ramp
Oregon State Police told East Oregonian the driver "overused the brakes" while descending and could have driven about three-quarters of a mile farther to reach a runaway ramp. The trooper said that after the vehicle left the lane, the semitrailer came to rest against the rock wall and officers coordinated with tow crews to clear the scene.
Safety Playbook For Drivers On The Grade
Commercial drivers are urged to check brakes before the descent, choose a proper engine gear to control speed, and use escape ramps if stopping power is lost, guidance echoed by state road safety materials. Motorists can check real-time conditions and camera views for Cabbage Hill on TripCheck before traveling the route.
Oregon State Police provided the initial account to local media, and state agencies continue to remind drivers that brake management and using designated escape ramps are the best defenses on the grade. We will update this story if officials release further details.
