A one-year-old boy is clinging to life after a car slammed into the side of an East Oakland apartment building yesterday, blasting debris into a ground-floor unit near 57th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard and sending neighbors scrambling for help.
Crash details and family account
The collision happened around 9:30 AM in the area of 57th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The boy's uncle told local TV that the vehicle shot in from a nearby car wash and crashed into the unit where the child was inside, according to ABC7. Relatives say debris rained down on the toddler, leaving him in critical condition. A photo shared with the station shows a torn-up interior, with damage to the unit and belongings scattered across the floor. Officials told ABC7 they had not yet identified what caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway.
Foothill corridor has seen similar collisions
The Foothill Boulevard corridor has dealt with serious crashes before. In December 2025, an AC Transit bus slammed into a building at 68th Avenue and Foothill, according to NBC Bay Area. In response to ongoing safety concerns, the City of Oakland has rolled out a speed-safety camera pilot along with other traffic safety efforts intended to cut down on severe and deadly collisions on city streets, according to a news release from the City of Oakland.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities have not released information about the driver or whether any charges might be forthcoming, and the cause of yesterday's crash is still under investigation, according to ABC7. Structural and safety inspections may be needed before residents are allowed back into the affected apartments. Investigators typically review vehicle data, witness statements and any nearby security footage as they work to piece together what happened. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
