A weekend drive in northwest Oklahoma City turned deadly when a car left the roadway and crashed into a roughly 20-foot-deep concrete spillway, killing one person and sending two others to the hospital, officials said.
The wreck happened shortly before 2:50 p.m. Saturday near Northwest 35th Street and May Avenue, according to local authorities. As reported by KOCO, firefighters used a modified crane to lift the vehicle out of the drainage area so crews could reach the occupants. Two people, who were briefly trapped, were taken to an area hospital, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the name of the person who died as the investigation continues.
Where It Happened and Why It Matters
The crash occurred along May Avenue, a busy north–south corridor in northwest Oklahoma City that has been the focus of recent work to improve the bridge and traffic flow. Earlier coverage of the May Avenue bridge overhaul noted that major construction began in late May, with lane shifts and ongoing work that can complicate travel and emergency access in the area.
Rescue and Investigation
Fire crews said the steep, confined concrete channel made the recovery difficult and required specialized equipment to safely remove the vehicle from the spillway. Investigators with the Oklahoma City Police Department remained at the scene to reconstruct the crash and determine what led the car into the drainage area. Officials said they are looking for any witnesses or video footage that might clarify the sequence of events. According to KOCO, two people were transported to a hospital and one person died in the incident.
