An evening dance class in Stockton turned frightening on Tuesday when a car slammed into a commercial building, sending debris into a dance studio and injuring two 9-year-old children, officials said. The crash happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. while a class was in session. Authorities said most students were on the opposite side of the building when the vehicle came through. Both children were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
What officials say
According to CBS Sacramento, the California Highway Patrol's Stockton office said the driver, described as a woman, missed a turn and drove into the building near Lower Sacramento Road and Grider Way. CHP investigators told the station they did not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. CBS Sacramento reported that emergency crews checked on students and other occupants inside the complex before clearing the scene.
The studio and the corridor
The storefront where the car hit is listed online as Dance Connection, a small local studio on Lower Sacramento Road, according to directory listings. Yahoo Local places the studio on the stretch near Grider Way, a commercial strip of shops and eateries. San Joaquin County has in recent years approved safety measures and improvements along portions of Lower Sacramento Road after repeated collisions, a government notice shows.
Investigators and next steps
CHP investigators are still examining the scene and have not announced any charges, according to the station. Investigators told CBS Sacramento they believe the driver simply missed the turn and that debris from the impact struck the two children. Authorities said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
