What began as a late-night birthday celebration at a short-term rental on Detroit’s west side turned deadly when gunfire erupted this morning. A 19-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old woman was hospitalized after a shooting around 3 a.m. in the 18700 block of Monica Street near Clarita Street, police said.
According to CBS Detroit, investigators say a suspect walked into the home, headed down to the basement, and opened fire, hitting both victims. The 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 20-year-old woman was rushed to a nearby hospital. Officers stayed on site as detectives combed through the property and spoke with shaken partygoers.
Detectives are urging anyone who was at the party, or who may have seen or heard anything, to come forward. The City of Detroit lists the Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260 and Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP for anonymous tips, according to the City of Detroit.
Short-Term Rental Parties Under Scrutiny
This latest shooting, tied to a short-term rental, feeds into a growing regional debate over how to rein in parties and large gatherings at these properties. Nearby Birmingham temporarily halted new short-term rental licenses after an April shooting at an Airbnb, according to Michigan Public, which reported that residents and local officials have been pushing for tighter oversight.
Police Hunt Gunman as Case Builds
The Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Section is leading the investigation and plans to chase down every tip as the case moves forward, CBS Detroit reported. Detectives have not publicly released any suspect information yet as they continue gathering evidence.
