A Chicago hospitality group has scooped up The Exchange Pickleball + Bar in the Lower Garden District, handing New Orleans' first dedicated pickleball venue a new out-of-town operator with broader national ties. The deal brings in fresh investment for the hybrid space of courts, food and live music, while the new owner says it intends to protect the club's local vibe and keep its staff in place.
Sale Details
The sale closed last Friday, when Clear Skies Hospitality finalized its purchase of the 26,000-square-foot club at 2120 Rousseau Street for $5.2 million, according to NOLA. Courthouse records cited in that coverage list Renée Melchiode as the seller and show the transaction was completed on May 22.
Who Bought It
Clear Skies Hospitality is the parent company of SPF, a Chicago pickleball lifestyle brand whose Lincoln Park flagship opened in January 2024 and spans about 42,000 square feet with nine indoor courts, according to a company release. The Exchange purchase is Clear Skies' first move beyond Chicago, the company said in its announcement on PRWeb.
Planned Upgrades
Rich Green, co-founder of Clear Skies, told reporters he has no plans to change The Exchange name or its existing management team and is instead eyeing tech and amenity upgrades such as TVs with instant replay on every court and an AI-assisted ball machine, according to a phone interview reported by NOLA. He also said the company expects to roll out more outdoor activities this fall as part of a phased plan.
Why Melchiode Sold
Founder Renée Melchiode has described The Exchange as more than just a business and framed the sale as a way to scale the concept rather than a distress move. She told Pickleball Innovators that she sought a partner who could grow programming and bring operational efficiencies, and she will stay involved through the transition. Remaining part of the operation, she said, was a key condition of the deal.
What Players Can Expect
For now, regulars are not expected to see big changes at check-in. Clear Skies and Exchange leadership say the venue will keep the same name and team while upgrades are layered in over time. Local coverage has cast the acquisition as part of a larger investor push into experiential "eatertainment" assets that bundle recreation, food and events, according to Canal Street Beat.
Next Steps
Over the coming months, players can expect small test runs of new features, with instant-replay screens or ball machines likely to appear early while management works with members on court schedules and competitive play formats. Clear Skies plans to tap its Chicago experience to introduce cross-club events and shared programming between SPF and The Exchange, according to the company's release on PRWeb.
