Summer in the Queen City is coming in hot, literally. Dense fog and heavy humidity rolled into Cincinnati early today, slowing the morning commute in low-lying river neighborhoods. Temperatures started in the mid-70s and are expected to spike, with a high near 95°F today and overnight lows stubbornly hanging in the mid-70s, setting up dangerous heat by midafternoon.
Extreme Heat Warning Through Thursday
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for the Cincinnati area through Thursday, July 2, with heat index values forecast to climb as high as 109°F. According to NWS Wilmington, the most punishing heat is expected tomorrow and Thursday, when highs rise into the mid to upper 90s and overnight temperatures offer little relief.
Foggy Mornings, Dangerous Afternoons
That patchy fog early in the day should burn off by midmorning, giving way to mostly sunny skies and light southwest winds of 0 to 7 mph. The most dangerous conditions are expected from about 1 to 6 p.m., when the heat will peak. Residents are urged to avoid heavy outdoor work during that window and to watch closely for signs of heat exhaustion.
Holiday Weekend Outlook
The ridge driving this heat is expected to weaken late in the week, opening the door for a chance of showers and thunderstorms beginning Friday and continuing into the Independence Day weekend. Any storms that pop up could bring brief heavy downpours and spotty relief from the heat, but they are not expected to knock it out across the region.
Where To Cool Off
For anyone who needs air conditioning, the city maintains a list of cooling centers and air-conditioned recreation facilities. Check the City of Cincinnati for specific locations and hours. Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor exertion during the peak heat window, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, and check in on neighbors who may be especially vulnerable.
