A $1.58 pack of hamburger buns turned into a fatal confrontation inside a Columbus Dollar General on Tuesday, leaving the store's manager dead and a trail of gunfire that later injured a police officer and a K9, authorities said.
Investigators say a customer trying to buy the buns pulled out a gun at the checkout counter, shot the manager, then bolted from the store. The employee was pronounced dead at the scene before officers could get her to a hospital.
What authorities say happened at the register
According to WTVM, the Muscogee County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 44-year-old Alexis Hill. The office told the station that Hill was ringing up a pack of hamburger buns that totaled $1.58 when the customer handed over two crumpled $1 bills.
As Hill worked to straighten the bills, the customer stepped to his right and shot her, the coroner's office told the outlet. WTVM reported that Hill was pronounced dead at the store around 10:45 a.m.
Police pursuit and second shooting
As reported by WSB-TV, the suspect ran from the Victory Drive store and was later involved in a separate exchange of gunfire with Columbus police off Baker Plaza Road. That shooting injured a police officer and a K9, and authorities said the officer is expected to survive.
WSB-TV added that police said the suspect later died and that investigators had not yet publicly identified him.
Why retail workers face this kind of danger
Experts note that workplace homicides tend to cluster in jobs that put workers face to face with the public, especially where cash is on hand, shifts run late and employees often work alone.
A May 2026 research brief from the National Council on Compensation Insurance, together with federal data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicates that workplace homicides have remained broadly steady in recent years and are disproportionately concentrated in customer-service and enforcement roles. Those analyses point to routine public interaction and cash handling as recurring risk factors for violent incidents at stores and other retail businesses.
Investigation continues
Columbus police and the Muscogee County Coroner's Office are still working the case and have not released additional identifying details about the suspect or a possible motive.
WTVM reported that the first shooting happened at the Dollar General on Victory Drive, and WSB-TV noted that the subsequent officer-involved shooting occurred near Baker Plaza Road.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbus Police Department, which is handling the criminal investigation.
