A stretch of Cook Avenue in the Vandeventer neighborhood turned into a homicide scene Thursday after an adult was shot and killed on the 4200 block, leaving the street taped off and investigators working into the evening.
Officers were called to the block before 5:30 p.m., and the case was handed to homicide detectives, according to First Alert 4. Police have not released the victim's age, and officials say they are not yet sharing any information about possible suspects.
Neighborhood context
For people who live in Vandeventer, the crime scene tape is an all too familiar sight. The neighborhood has seen a run of shootings and violent incidents in recent months, leaving residents increasingly on edge about certain blocks.
In May, a rush hour shooting on Vandeventer Avenue wounded two women, and CompStat data shows crime can cluster block by block in this part of north St. Louis.
How to help investigators
Detectives are asking anyone who might have information, video or tips about Thursday's killing to get in touch. St. Louis homicide detectives can be reached at (314) 444-5371, and tips can also be shared through CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department lists those contact options and notes that anonymous tips that lead to arrests may be eligible for a reward.
As of Thursday night, investigators had not announced any arrests or a possible motive. Detectives continued to canvas the area and review potential surveillance footage, and First Alert 4 reports that the Homicide Division is again urging anyone with information to call (314) 444-5371.
