A Broward County man is facing charges after police say a luxury SUV vanished from a West Palm Beach parking lot in the dead of night, capping a run of car break-ins that left several drivers waking up to bad news.
Investigators say the theft and break-ins unfolded in the early hours of May 25 in a lot along Washington Road. From there, the case followed a familiar South Florida crime trail: grainy surveillance video, license-plate reader hits and, eventually, an arrest miles away from where it all started.
According to WPBF, detectives identified the suspect as Joshua Burroughs Jr. Surveillance footage allegedly shows a white Volkswagen SUV pulling into the lot shortly before the Mercedes SUV was taken. Investigators told WPBF that several other vehicles in the lot were broken into without any clear signs of forced entry, and that photos of the stolen Mercedes later turned up on the suspect’s phone. The outlet reports that Burroughs briefly ran from officers before being found inside a Deerfield Beach home.
How investigators tracked the case
License-plate reader data helped officers trace the stolen Mercedes from West Palm Beach into Lake Worth and then south into Broward County, where the SUV was ultimately recovered in Pompano Beach. Authorities say Burroughs admitted at one point to being inside the stolen vehicle and told investigators that he and another person drove from Broward into Palm Beach County intending to commit burglaries. Detectives are still combing through video footage and cell phone evidence as the case moves forward.
Charges and next steps
Per WPBF, Burroughs faces several felony counts, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, grand theft auto and criminal mischief. Prosecutors will decide what formal charges to file once detectives finish assembling their reports, and police are asking anyone with information about what happened in the Washington Road lot to contact investigators. The investigation remains active.
Legal note
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Burroughs is presumed innocent unless and until a judge or jury finds otherwise. Any punishment would depend on the specific charges ultimately filed and the outcome of the criminal case.
Car break-ins continue to be a stubborn problem in parking areas across Palm Beach County, and law enforcement routinely reminds drivers to lock their vehicles, stash valuables out of sight and report anything that looks off.
