A rural Green County curve turned tragic Thursday when a 67-year-old Blanchardville woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 39 in the Town of York. According to the Green County Sheriff's Office, her car failed to negotiate a curve on STH-39 west of County Highway J, left the roadway, entered the north ditch and hit a driveway embankment before overturning onto its passenger side. Emergency crews pulled her from the vehicle, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Per WMTV, the driver had been traveling westbound when the crash occurred. The New Glarus Fire Department handled the extrication, with New Glarus EMS, the Monticello Fire Department and UW Med Flight assisting on scene. Officials said the crash remains under investigation and that no further information will be released at this time.
Responders At The Scene
Multiple agencies converged on the stretch of highway to shut down the road and secure the area. First responders included the Green County Sheriff's Office, New Glarus Fire Department, New Glarus EMS, Monticello Fire Department and UW Med Flight, according to 1011 Now.
Crews worked around the overturned vehicle to extricate the driver after it came to rest on its passenger side, while county personnel managed traffic and investigators documented the wreck.
Crash History On STH-39
The run of STH-39 through York and the New Glarus area has seen its share of serious wrecks. A Green County Sheriff's Office press release details a fatal motorcycle crash on that same highway in 2022. County releases also show deputies are routinely called to run-off-the-road crashes on winding rural state highways, a reminder of how quickly a missed curve can turn deadly.
Investigation Ongoing
The Green County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation and says the crash remains under active review. Officials did not release additional details Thursday.
