A pre-dawn head-on collision in central Phoenix left a man dead and a woman seriously injured early Saturday, after an SUV and another car collided near Thomas Road and 40th Street. Officers arrived just after 6:30 a.m. to find the two-car wreck, and first responders pulled both people from the SUV before rushing them to a nearby hospital. The man was later pronounced dead, while the woman remained hospitalized in serious condition.
According to Arizona's Family, Phoenix police said the SUV, driven by a 70-year-old man, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into another vehicle. The driver of that second car was not hurt. Detectives have not yet said why the SUV veered over the center line, and the crash remains under investigation.
Thomas Road's safety record
Thomas Road has already been flagged as a problem corridor. A statewide analysis ranked the stretch from N. 71st Avenue to N. 37th Avenue among Arizona’s 10 most dangerous roadway segments, with speeding and impaired driving identified as key factors. ABC15 reported the findings, which came from MoneyGeek's review of crash data. On busy arterials like Thomas Road, high speeds and heavy traffic mean that when a vehicle drifts into oncoming lanes, there is not much room for anyone to recover.
Investigation ongoing
Phoenix police told Arizona's Family that detectives are still piecing together what happened, reviewing the crash scene, vehicle damage and witness statements to determine why the SUV crossed the center line. Officials have not said whether impairment, a medical issue or some other factor may have been involved.
