A deadly burst of gunfire in east Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon left one person dead, another injured, and a major east-valley artery shut down near Flamingo Road and Boulder Highway, authorities said.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to FOX5 Las Vegas. Flamingo Road was closed in both directions as officers combed the area for evidence, creating a traffic headache along the already busy corridor and prompting officials to urge drivers to steer clear.
Another Shooting Nearby
The violence came on the heels of another recent shooting in the same general area. Last Friday, LVMPD officers responded to a separate incident in the 4800 block of Boulder Highway, near Flamingo, where a man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head, as reported by KTNV. That case remained under investigation and has added to growing unease about crime along the busy east-valley stretch.
Boulder Highway Safety Push
Even as shootings draw attention to crime, Boulder Highway has also been at the center of a long-term safety makeover. Henderson officials recently switched on roughly 400 new streetlights along a 7.5-mile span as part of the Reimagine Boulder Highway project, which aims to cut crashes and improve nighttime visibility, according to roughly 400 new streetlights. The broader plan calls for narrower lanes, wider sidewalks and upgraded transit features designed to slow traffic and make it safer for people on foot and on buses.
Police have not released any suspect description or possible motive in Tuesday's shooting. Investigators remained at the scene into the evening and asked anyone who might have seen or heard anything to come forward, FOX5 Las Vegas reported. Tipsters can reach the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or Crime Stoppers of Southern Nevada.
This is an active investigation, and this story will be updated as officials release additional details.
