An 81-year-old man from Lady Lake was killed yesterday evening when the Subaru Forester he was driving left the roadway on Griffin Avenue at Grays Airport Road, hitting a guardrail and several trees. A 79-year-old passenger in the SUV was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
According to Tampa Bay 28, the Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened a little after 6:45 p.m. The 2026 Subaru Forester was traveling eastbound on Griffin Avenue when it failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and ran off the road. Troopers said the 81-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 79-year-old passenger was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Run-off-road wrecks that end in collisions with trees or guardrails remain some of the most lethal crashes in Florida. The state’s Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles report for 2023 cites nearly 390,000 lane-departure crashes and lists impacts with trees and guardrails among the deadliest first-harmful events on record.
Investigation Ongoing
Troopers are still piecing together what led up to Sunday’s crash and have not yet said whether speed, impairment or a medical episode might have been involved. As reported by Tampa Bay 28, investigators released the ages and hometown of the two occupants but are withholding their names while the investigation continues.
