A fatal crash brought Interstate 85 southbound in Jackson County to a grinding halt early Monday, choking off the morning commute and leaving a long line of cars and trucks parked on the pavement as investigators moved through the debris.
Southbound Lanes Shut Down, Traffic Stretches For Miles
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, SkyFOX Traffic showed all southbound lanes near Highway 129 still shut down while crews worked the scene, and at points officers were steering drivers onto the shoulder to sneak past the closure. As of 6:15 a.m., the station reported traffic stacked up for roughly 11 miles, after earlier updates pegged backups at more than seven miles, and traffic dispatchers were urging anyone who could to steer clear of that stretch.
Conflicting Early Reports On Location And What Was Involved
Atlanta News First said in a First Alert Traffic update that the crash, which that station described as involving a semi-truck, happened just before 5 a.m. and was blocking lanes near Highway 53. The outlet advised drivers to hop over to Highways 124 and 332 as alternates. Early breaking details often depend on which camera or chopper feed is up first, so reporters leaned heavily on aerial traffic shots while they waited for formal confirmation from officials.
Investigators On Scene, Key Details Still Under Wraps
Authorities had not yet released how many vehicles were involved or any information about the victim or victims, and the investigation was still active, FOX 5 Atlanta noted. Jackson County and state troopers typically carry out detailed on-scene reconstructions after serious crashes, and drivers were warned to expect the southbound lanes to stay closed while investigators documented the wreck and crews worked to clear the interstate.
