
One person was killed, and another was seriously hurt, Saturday in a violent crash along Route 66 at Mamont Drive in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, according to officials. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and local responders remained on scene as the investigation got underway.
Crash scene and response
Emergency crews were called to the busy intersection, where one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was rushed to a local trauma center, according to WTAE. The station reported that officials released a photo showing a heavily damaged truck and another vehicle, and noted that Murrysville Medic One said on Facebook that its crews had been dispatched to the wreck at Route 66 and Mamont Drive.
Route 66 safety context
The portion of Route 66 where the crash occurred has already been on the state’s radar for safety and infrastructure work. According to PennDOT, a District 12 pavement-preservation project is set to replace traffic signals and upgrade ADA ramps along stretches that include Washington Township. In addition, CBS Pittsburgh reported that PennDOT recorded 22 crashes on the Route 66/356 corridor between 2020 and 2024, resulting in 13 injuries. Investigation ongoing
Washington Township police and county authorities said the cause of Saturday’s crash remains under investigation and that the names of those involved have not been released, according to WTAE. Officials said more information will be made public after the coroner and investigators complete their work.
