A Del Rio police officer was arrested Thursday after investigators say a woman riding as his motorcycle passenger was seriously injured in a crash last fall. Officer Homer Perez, an off-duty member of the Del Rio Police Department, was taken into custody at the department while on a modified-duty assignment and faces a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. The arrest comes after months of investigative work and a grand jury presentation earlier this month.
According to a statement from the Del Rio Police Department, reported by News4SanAntonio, the crash happened on Sept. 27, 2025, at about 2:37 a.m. Perez was riding a 2020 Ducati with an adult female passenger on Spur 239 when, police said, the passenger became unstable, was unable to maintain her seat, and fell onto the roadway. A passing motorist transported her to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, and she was later transferred to a San Antonio hospital for extensive treatment.
Investigation and arrest
The Del Rio Police Department said its Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigation Division, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Ranger Division, conducted a joint investigation into the crash. The department told News4SanAntonio that the criminal case was presented to the Val Verde County grand jury on June 12 and that an arrest warrant was issued for Perez on June 25. Later that evening, Perez was arrested at the Del Rio Police Department while working a modified-duty assignment. According to the department, he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the GEO Correctional Facility pending the magistration process.

Under Texas law, aggravated assault that causes serious bodily injury is a felony. Texas Penal Code §22.02 defines aggravated assault and provides the statutory framework for charges and punishment, which can be elevated in certain circumstances. What happens next
Perez was booked at the county detention center and is being held pending magistration, the department said. Prosecutors in Val Verde County will determine whether to file formal charges or set an arraignment date as the case moves through the local courts.
