A late-night dirt-bike stop in Dorchester spiraled into chaos Tuesday when a crowd hurled drinks and even a glass at a Boston police officer, according to a video now ricocheting around social media. The clip shows the officer trying to detain a rider before both crash to the pavement, and the officer’s body camera is knocked off his vest in the struggle.
Police say the encounter started around 9:24 p.m. at Old Road and Ellington Street, where officers responded to a radio call for a loud disturbance. Records identify the officer as Jesse Kennedy. Viral clips show Kennedy holding the rider’s hands behind his back until the rider yanks free. The dirt bike, which police say had no rear plate, and the officer then slam to the ground as people in the crowd cheer. Officers estimated about 100 to 150 people at the scene, many of whom hurled drinks and other objects and helped the rider get away. The report does not list any arrests from the crowd, and additional officers eventually cleared the area, according to the Boston Herald.
Old Road Has A History Of Late-Night Takeovers
Old Road and nearby Ellington Street have long been trouble spots for unsanctioned weekend parties that draw big crowds and sometimes tip into violence. In past years, that has led to temporary street closures and barricades. Neighbors and police told the Dorchester Reporter that the area routinely attracts revelers from outside the neighborhood and that residents have been pushing for tougher, more consistent enforcement and physical changes to the street. That backdrop helps explain how what started as a routine stop could so quickly swell into a rowdy confrontation.
Union Calls Out Staffing Concerns
The Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association quickly highlighted the video as proof of a staffing crunch, posting on X that “fewer cops means less safety” and calling the crowd’s behavior “completely unacceptable. the disrespect is alarmingly disgraceful,” as noted by the Boston Herald. The union argued the incident shows how limited officers can be when they are outnumbered by a large group and waiting for backup. The department’s internal review of body camera footage and the official report is expected to shape any follow-up steps.
What Comes Next
Investigators are now reviewing the videos and the police report to determine whether charges should be filed and to identify anyone in the crowd who may have interfered with the stop. Neighbors say the dust-up is just the latest flashpoint in a long-running battle over late-night takeovers on Old Road, and they are renewing calls for a coordinated response from police and other city agencies. We will update this story if officials announce arrests or release additional details.
