Downtown Napa just scored a bigger front row seat to the river, courtesy of Downtown Joe's, the blue‑collar brewpub that anchors the neighborhood. After a yearlong remodel, the spot has quietly opened a new Second Street terrace that stretches outdoor seating and sharpens those Napa River sightlines. The above‑ground terrace, which debuted in February, gives the Main Street staple more room for live music, DJs and a fuller dinner program, all while last year's construction stayed largely out of diners' way.
Owner Joe Peatman summed up the new vibe simply, saying, "you can see straight through to the river." Under the platform, contractors tucked in new electrical service, gas lines and a grease trap, and painters even prepped the restaurant's longtime hallway fixture, the painted tree limb nicknamed the "Napa moose," for this summer's 250th. As reported by the Napa Valley Register, Downtown Joe's stayed open throughout the roughly yearlong project.
Terrace Nights And River Views
The fresh outdoor perch is already folded into Downtown Joe's summer routine, with live DJs and recurring karaoke on the calendar. The restaurant's events page lists live DJs Thursday through Sunday along with a recurring karaoke night, and the plan is to lean on the terrace for a mix of live music and DJ sets as the weather heats up. For the current lineup, see the Downtown Joe's events page.
Food, Late‑Night And A Bigger Kitchen
In the kitchen, Downtown Joe's now runs separate lunch and dinner menus and has expanded its dinner offerings to fold in beef, pasta and seafood dishes that used to appear only as specials. Natalie Tobler says the kitchen revamp is designed to keep the concept affordable while still elevating the food, and the business recently brought on chef Javier Guzman to steer those changes. The restaurant rolled out a late‑night food menu on June 1 and plans to keep the kitchen open later on summer weekends. Owners say a third phase has already been approved that would expand the kitchen by about 40 percent, relocate the brewery to the north and add a rooftop deck in a multiyear buildout, according to the Napa Valley Register.
Historic Building, Modern Upgrades
The terrace rests on the Oberon building, which first went up in 1893 and was rebuilt in an Art Deco style after a 1932 fire. The structure underwent a seismic retrofit in 2010 and held firm during the 2014 South Napa earthquake. Downtown Joe's traces its brewing and restaurant history to that old brewery space and lists its Main Street location and hours on the restaurant's website. For more on the building's past and the pub's backstory, check the Downtown Joe's about page.
Design And What To Expect Next
The new terrace was designed by Brendan Kelly of Kelly + Morgan Architects, who handled the above‑ground platform and site coordination for the build. The firm's local experience made it a natural pick for a tight downtown site, according to Kelly + Morgan Architects. With approvals already lined up for the next phase, regulars can look forward to more kitchen capacity and, eventually, a rooftop hangout that will broaden what Downtown Joe's can host.
All summer long, the terrace is poised to become a focal point of Downtown Joe's calendar, from DJ nights to international‑game watch parties and post‑work drinks, while the restaurant keeps pouring for locals and visitors from morning through late night.
