San Francisco is about to get a skyline-sized sci-fi upgrade when Illuminate flips on "7x7," a grid of 49 vertical laser beams over Civic Center Plaza, at 9 PM today. The free installation invites people to literally walk under the light show and is scheduled to run every night from the summer solstice through Independence Day. Organizers say they timed the piece to overlap with Pride Weekend, multiple FIFA World Cup matches and the city's 250th anniversary.
Produced by local nonprofit Illuminate, 7x7 maps one beam of light to each square mile of the city and will fire from dusk until dawn nightly between June 21 and July 4, according to Illuminate. The group says 49 laser units are mounted on a custom truss about 10 feet off the ground, creating a walk-under canopy of light. The project page also underscores that the display is free and open to everyone, with no sponsorships, naming rights or admission fees attached.
Mayor Daniel Lurie formally unveiled the piece this week as part of a broader push to welcome visitors during a packed summer season, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department said in a press release.
How the show works
The installation lines up 49 "laser space cannons" in a 7-by-7 grid that organizers say will be visible across the Bay and can be experienced both close-up in the plaza and from distant vantage points. The beams will cycle through different color schemes during the run, showing rainbow hues for Pride Weekend and red, white and blue in the lead-up to July 4, the result of a partnership with NuSalt Laser and local engineering teams, according to Illuminate. To keep the canopy walkable, engineers mounted the lasers on trusses roughly ten feet above the plaza so families and visitors can move freely beneath the lights.
Local businesses hope for a bump
Owners and workers around Civic Center say big light pieces like this have helped revive foot traffic during recent events. Allyson Denis, owner of Chao Pescao, told ABC7 that "anything that we can do to illuminate - literally illuminate - our city" has brought people back to the neighborhood. Organizers say they are hoping 7x7 keeps that trend going and pushes more visitors into nearby restaurants and shops before and after the show.
Visitor tips
City officials and local outlets are urging spectators to take public transit and dress in layers for the evening fog and breeze, since the most dramatic views land after sunset. The SF Standard has recommended using transit and scouting vantage points around the city for wider sightlines. If you want the full walk-under experience in Civic Center Plaza, expect an immersive, crowd-friendly setup and consider arriving early if you are picky about your viewing spot.
Whether you post up in Civic Center Plaza or hunt for a favorite neighborhood overlook, the city says 7x7 is free to the public and will run nightly through July 4.
