A late-night crash investigation in San Diego’s Colina Del Sol neighborhood turned even more chaotic yesterday when a suspected DUI driver allegedly barreled straight into the active scene, smashing into marked police cars and striking two officers, according to authorities. The collision unfolded at the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and 50th Street, where San Diego police had temporarily shut down both directions of the boulevard. Two SDPD sergeants suffered minor injuries and the driver was taken into custody at the scene, police said.
According to FOX 5 San Diego, officers say the driver, a 46-year-old man behind the wheel of a Kia Soul, appeared to make no effort to slow down as he approached the closure. The Kia allegedly slammed into two marked patrol vehicles, then continued on into the original crash site, where it hit the two sergeants. Police say the man was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, and the SDPD Traffic Division is now leading the investigation.
Investigation and Injuries
Investigators had used marked patrol cars with emergency lights activated to block off El Cajon Boulevard at 50th Street while they worked a previous serious-injury collision. According to SDPD, the Kia drove through that closure point and into the scene. The two injured sergeants were treated for minor, non-life-threatening injuries and were described as stable. As traffic officers sort out how the second crash happened, witnesses and anyone with additional information are being urged to contact investigators.
Legal Context and Next Steps
San Diego police told FOX 5 San Diego that the arrest was on suspicion of felony DUI. Under California law, a DUI that proximately causes bodily injury can be charged as a felony under California Vehicle Code section 23153. The SDPD Traffic Division continues to handle the probe, and anyone with tips can contact police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477, authorities said. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges once the investigation and any testing are complete.
