An overnight assault on Columbus' East Side has left one person fighting for their life and a 29-year-old man sitting in a jail cell.
Shortly after midnight, officers were called to the 4000 block of East Livingston Avenue around 12:15 a.m. and found an unconscious victim with severe injuries. The person was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition, according to WSYX.
Homicide Unit Joins Investigation
Given how serious the injuries are, Columbus police brought in the Homicide Unit to take over the case, a step they typically reserve for assaults where a victim may not survive. Columbus Division of Police media materials show that homicide detectives are routinely assigned to critically injuring assaults and list the Homicide Unit tipline at 614-645-4730, per a Columbus Division of Police press release.
Suspect Arrested, Charges Not Yet Released
Officers arrested 29-year-old Anthony Grose in connection with the assault. Police have not yet specified what kind of assault is alleged or released a list of formal charges, according to WSYX. Grose remains in custody while detectives work to sort out exactly what unfolded in the early-morning attack.
East Livingston Corridor Has Seen Multiple Incidents
The East Livingston corridor has been under a harsh spotlight lately. This spring alone, the area has seen multiple violent incidents, including a May 11 shooting in the 3800 block that left a man dead and resulted in an indictment, covered in detail in a report on the May 11 gas station killing. That case and others have kept public safety on the East Side front and center as detectives keep pressing potential witnesses to come forward.
Anyone with information about today's assault is urged to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477, according to a Columbus Division of Police press release. Investigators are especially interested in hearing from anyone who has video from the area or other tips that could help piece together what happened.
