For neighbors on Sutter Avenue, it was a nasty case of déjà vu Thursday night as a fast-moving fire ripped through a three-story building at 1013 Sutter Avenue, sending heavy smoke across the block while firefighters fought to keep the flames from jumping to nearby homes.
Crews battled the blaze as residents watched from the street, and by morning investigators were on scene, with the charred building still taped off and off-limits.
According to News 12 New York, the FDNY says firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the back of 1013 Sutter Avenue before flames pushed up into the second and third floors. The outlet reports that crews worked through the night to get the blaze under control and keep it from spreading to neighboring buildings.
Second Fire At The Same Address
According to NYCFire.net and local reports, a 2-alarm call also went out for 1013 Sutter Avenue on Christmas Day 2025 after a fire tore through a first-floor Chinese restaurant at the same address. PropertyShark lists 1013 Sutter as a three-story mixed-use building, with a ground-floor storefront below residential units above.
Permits And The Probe
As reported by News 12 New York, Department of Buildings records show the owners pulled permits earlier this month to renovate the property after last winter’s blaze. The outlet also notes that the cause of Thursday night’s fire is under active investigation by FDNY fire investigators and the city’s fire marshals.
What Investigators Look For
FDNY's Bureau of Fire Investigation typically examines burn patterns, interviews witnesses and checks permits and recent work at a property to determine where and how a fire started. When a building sees repeat fires, investigators usually pay close attention to any recent construction, the building’s mechanical systems and commercial operations on the ground floor as they work to piece together what went wrong.
