Neighbors on a hillside block of Echo Park were jolted late Sunday when gunfire broke the quiet and left a 35-year-old man fatally wounded just a short walk from Dodger Stadium. The victim, identified by authorities as Michael Ortega, was rushed by first responders to a hospital, where he died of his gunshot wounds. Police said the shooting happened around 9:10 p.m., and a male suspect took off from the scene in a vehicle.
What police say
According to MyNewsLA, a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman said the shooting unfolded outside the apartment building at 1126 White Knoll Drive, directly adjacent to Dodger Stadium. She told the outlet that a male suspect fired at Ortega and then fled in a vehicle. Ortega’s city of residence was not immediately available, police said.
Investigation and scene
Citizen dispatch audio and bystander video captured the tense response, with multiple 911 calls and police radio traffic starting around 9:07 p.m. Officers and Los Angeles Fire Department crews were on the hillside within minutes. Video posted online shows a heavy police presence lining the street as detectives canvassed for witnesses and searched the pavement and nearby slopes for evidence.
Neighborhood reaction and context
Residents said the killing has ratcheted up long-simmering worries about safety on the hills above Dodger Stadium, where campus scares and weapon-related calls have surfaced this month. Coverage of a separate gun scare in early June detailed how a nearby school went into lockdown as officers swept the neighborhood. In the comments on the related MyNewsLA story, locals also pointed to chronic issues such as broken streetlights in the area.
How to help investigators
Anyone with information is urged to contact LAPD’s Operations-Central Bureau Homicide at 213-486-8700 or 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (after hours), and to submit anonymous tips to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers, according to the LAPD advisory. Detectives said the investigation remains active and no arrests had been announced.
Authorities are asking anyone who was in the area Sunday night, or who has security or cellphone footage from around the time of the shooting, to contact investigators as the case moves forward.
