An early-morning fire tore through a fourth-floor unit at the Wyndham Apartments in Edgewater on Friday, sending thick smoke toward the lakefront and pulling a heavy fire response to the normally quiet stretch of Sheridan Road. Multiple engines and crews rushed to the scene as neighbors gathered across Sheridan and in nearby parks, watching the high-rise partially disappear behind a wall of smoke.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Chopper 7 footage showed flames shooting from a fourth-floor unit of the roughly 12-story building, with firefighters still working to get the blaze under control at about 6 a.m. The station reported multiple firetrucks at the scene and said the cause of the fire was not immediately known. Authorities had also not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured, according to ABC7.
Building, Address And Neighborhood
According to Apartments.com, the Wyndham Apartments are located at 5240 N. Sheridan Road, a longstanding multi-unit waterfront high-rise in Edgewater. The property sits on the lake side of Sheridan between Foster and Berwyn, part of the dense cluster of residential towers that line the north lakefront.
Response And Traffic Impacts
Chopper footage showed firefighters hitting part of the structure with heavy streams of water while additional crews worked from the street below. ABC7 Chicago reported that Sheridan Road was shut down between Foster and Berwyn to make room for the emergency operation. Fire crews remained on scene into the morning to chase down hot spots and stabilize the building.
Why High-Rise Fires Can Be Especially Risky
Fires in multi-unit and high-rise buildings can push smoke and heat quickly through vertical shafts and shared systems, which complicates both evacuations and firefighting tactics. A report from the U.S. Fire Administration notes that apartment fires make up a significant portion of residential fires that cause injuries, with cooking and equipment failure among the more common ignition sources. The cause of Friday’s fire remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details.
City and building officials had not issued further comment as of midmorning. Investigators typically interview residents and review building systems before sharing findings publicly. This story will be updated when officials or building management release more information.
