El Paso is waking up to a hot, dry Sunday, with the thermometer expected to surge into the upper 90s. The forecast calls for a high near 99°F today (Sunday, June 28). Skies stay mostly sunny, but there is a slight chance of spotty rain showers after 4 p.m., mainly near the international border or over higher terrain. West‑southwest winds will strengthen through the afternoon, running from the single digits to the mid-teens, with gusts that could reach the upper 20s. That breeze will make the heat feel a bit more relentless and could kick up dust in exposed areas.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
By afternoon, expect breezy conditions, with winds around 9–18 mph and higher gusts near any late‑day downdrafts. Most of the metro should stay dry, but any thunderstorm that manages to pop up could deliver strong outflow gusts and short bursts of heavy rain. If you can, shift outdoor plans earlier in the day and secure anything outside that might go airborne, from lawn chairs to trash cans.
Red Flag Warning Nearby
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning through 8 p.m. MDT Sunday (June 28) for parts of southwest New Mexico, where very dry air and southwest winds of 15–25 mph will create near‑critical fire weather. Fuels are extremely dry, and small fires could spread quickly, while gusty outflows can loft blowing dust into the broader borderland. For the official alert and detailed coverage area, see NWS El Paso.
How To Plan
Skip any outdoor burning, keep grills and vehicles off dry grass, and bring plenty of water if you need to work outside. The city has activated cooling centers, and some libraries are keeping extended hours; check our update from yesterday for locations and schedules in the full cooling center list, as per Hoodline. Keep an eye on the sky this afternoon and consult the NWS before heading toward higher terrain.
