A former Kannapolis City Schools employee is facing a felony charge after investigators say they uncovered AI-generated images showing the sexual exploitation of children during a search of his home.
Authorities identified the suspect as Sean Hunter and charged him with child sexual exploitation. Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence before making the arrest, and they say the files they seized appeared to be created using artificial-intelligence tools.
According to WCNC, those AI-generated images formed the basis for the charge, and the station reports that Hunter previously worked for Kannapolis City Schools.
AI images and the national response
Federal authorities have been increasingly treating realistic AI-produced sexual images of children as child sexual abuse material and pursuing criminal cases built around that technology. The Justice Department detailed an August 2024 arrest in which prosecutors alleged an Army soldier used AI tools to create explicit images and then faced federal charges.
An analysis by The Associated Press has tracked a rise in tips involving AI content reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, a trend that investigators say is reshaping how child sexual abuse material cases are handled.
State law and penalties
North Carolina law breaks sexual-exploitation offenses involving minors into several degrees and allows felony charges for creating, possessing or distributing sexually explicit material that involves children. Prosecutors can bring those charges when such material is produced or possessed, according to the North Carolina General Assembly.
What happens next
The investigation into Hunter is still underway, and prosecutors will decide whether to pursue additional charges and when he will appear in court. Public records did not immediately show the timing of an initial court appearance. Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact local law enforcement.
