Dallas detectives are zeroing in on the last of five people they say were involved in the Oct. 16, 2023, fatal shooting of 23-year-old Chiquavion Ross inside a Far North Dallas apartment. Ross, whose relatives and investigators say was the father of an unborn child, was rushed to a hospital after the attack and later died. Now, police are banking on the community to help them put a name to the final face caught on camera walking into and out of his unit.
How the slaying unfolded
Officers were called around 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2023, to an apartment in the 9700 block of Forest Lane, where they found Ross suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to The Dallas Morning News. The case was quickly assigned to the homicide unit, and the Dallas Police Department has continued to post public updates urging anyone with information to step forward.
Police release surveillance and suspect description
Investigators say surveillance video from the complex captured five people going into and out of Ross' apartment around the time of the shooting. Four of those individuals are already in custody. The holdout, detectives say, is seen on video wearing a cream hoodie, olive-colored shorts, and an afro-style haircut.
"There was a young father who never got a chance to see his unborn child," Det. Chris Walton said while asking for help identifying the remaining suspect. Police told reporters that four of the five suspects have been arrested, as reported by FOX 4.
Arrests and a violent warrant service
Over the past year, several people linked to the case have been arrested or charged. One wanted man was taken into custody on Nov. 16 during a task-force operation in the 9900 block of Adleta Boulevard that turned violent when officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire.
According to the Dallas Police Department, a task-force member was wounded in that operation, the suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment, and a modified firearm was recovered at the scene. In their public account, police tie that arrest directly to the Forest Lane homicide investigation.
Charges and next steps
The Dallas Morning News reported that James Earl Jones and Ahskari Trussell have since been charged with capital murder in connection with Ross' killing, with Dallas County prosecutors handling the cases. Detectives say additional arrests and outstanding warrants remain part of an active homicide investigation, and they note that federal partners have assisted with tracking down fugitives tied to the case.
