A man wanted on an active felony warrant turned the busy intersection at 84th Avenue and Federal Boulevard into a brief footrace on Thursday, according to Westminster police. Officers say they contacted the man at the corner, and he tried to run away on foot, at one point darting into oncoming traffic, before they caught up with him and took him into custody. Police reported finding multiple controlled substances on the suspect, including cocaine and MDMA.
According to a Facebook post from the Westminster Police Department, the man was contacted by officers near 84th Ave and Federal Blvd and arrested after a short chase. The post states the suspect had an active felony warrant for failure to comply with multiple charges, including possession with intent to distribute, vehicular eluding, motor vehicle theft, obstruction, and resisting arrest. The department also notes that an evidence sample tested positive for cocaine HCl after being run on a TruNarc narcotics analyzer on May 19.
How The Drugs Were Identified
Field drug screens were cited by the department as part of the evidence chain. Devices like the TruNarc handheld analyzer give officers rapid, presumptive results in the field. As Police Magazine explains, TruNarc uses Raman spectroscopy to identify many controlled substances quickly, but agencies typically send samples to a lab for confirmatory testing. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation maintains toxicology and forensic testing services that provide the formal confirmations prosecutors rely on in charging decisions.
Warrant And Legal Notes
The department's social media post says the active felony warrant stems from a failure-to-comply arrest history and lists alleged offenses tied to distribution, vehicle theft, and eluding. Westminster police did not provide the suspect's name in the post and did not immediately release any new charges tied to the June arrest. As with all arrest reports, a warrant and a field test are allegations until verified, and any charges would be handled by the appropriate prosecuting authority.
